It’s a dorm thing [part four].

This is the final post in my four-part series about the dorms at SMU. See parts 1, 2, and 3.

SMU also has information on the dorms that is useful. Find it here.

Which dorm should I pick?

  • If you’re a freshman who’s looking for a more social dorm, I recommend Boaz or McElvaney. Don’t get me wrong, the other dorms are good for this purpose too. But these two dorms are the best choice.
  • If you’re a freshman who’s looking for a quieter dorm, look for a four-class hall. Upperclassmen are prone to studying, unlike freshmen who are prone to socializing. It’s not always like that, but I’ve noticed that it helps.
  • If you’re looking for a kitchen, go with Perkins (freshmen only), Smith or Moore. Those are the three dorms that I’m positive have kitchens.
  • If you’re looking for a specific community, FAC=Mary Hay and Peyton; Honors=Virginia-Snider; Wellness=Smith; Hilltop Scholars=Perkins and Smith; Volunteers=Service House; Married students=Hawk or Martin. We can’t forget Sorority or Fraternity Row.
  • If you’re looking for a newly renovated dorm, go with Boaz (freshmen only), Mary Hay, Peyton, Shuttles
  • If you’re looking for a dorm with “character,go with Perkins (freshmen only), Smith, Cockrell-McIntosh, Morrison-McGinnis, Moore or the Service House.
  • If you want to be in the heart of campus stay away from the dorms near the South Quad or the God Quad.
  • If you think extreme proximity to a dining hall is vital, go with Virginia-Snider or McElvaney.
  • If you’re stalking me at the moment and want to re-live my experiences, live in Perkins your freshman year and Mary Hay your sophomore year.
  • If none of this sounds appealing, go off campus.
