It’s a dorm thing [Part One].
Someone keeps searching for “SMU dorms” or something to that effect, so I figured I’d help them out by profiling the dorms at SMU. I’m guessing whoever is doing the searching is also thinking about coming to SMU.
Part 2 is here.
Boaz: It’s the freshman party dorm and pretty much the reason why I’m NOT an RA. Because I have a sneaking (although perfectly plausible) suspicion that I’d get stuck in that dorm. And that’s something I don’t want to do. It’s newly renovated, which is nice. But who knows how long that will last? I didn’t live in Boaz, but I’ve heard horror stories involving drunk people and certainly bodily functions in elevators. I’d classify it as the stereotypical “New to College, Dorm from Hell” type dorm. The one that’s in all those Q&A-What-Do-I-Do-These-People-Are-Driving-Me-Nuts type questions that seem to pop up on pre-college sites.
Cockrell-McIntosh: Four-class, revonated in like the 90s. It’s pretty much standard fare as far as dorms go. I’ve never heard specific complaints about it. It’s located in the South Quad, which gets extremely muddy when it rains. But on the plus side, it’s close to Mac’s Place (one of the dining services) and the Meadows Museum and the Stadium. But it’s not close to any academic building (unless you’re a theology student).
Daniel House: Again, not much to report except that it’s close to Sorority Row.
Mary Hay: This is my current dorm. It’s newly renovated (as of 2007-08) and home to half of the FAC (along with Peyton). It’s four-class. The perks? Suite-style rooms and it’s basically in the middle of campus, so the walking doesn’t suck. I’m on the first floor, so it’s pretty quiet except for the piano in the lobby. As far as dorms go, I give it a hearty thumbs up.
McElvaney: Another freshman dorm, but slightly tamer than Boaz. It’s also home to Mac’s Place. The rooms are teeny-tiny. But if you get locked out of your room, the South Area Desk is located in the lobby.
