Today in my government class we discussed the judiciary system. More specifically, we discussed judicial review and Marbury v. Madison. My professor was explaining the concepts and gave an example of Congress passing a law that would create a state religion. Specifically, he said “Presbyterian.”
While a law such as that would certainly be unconstitutional, it got me to thinking. If the U.S. were to have a state religion, what would it be?
Clearly we can’t go with some overused religion. That takes out Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Let’s face it–those have been done before, by governments who are far better at this state religion thing that we are.
My Suggestions:
- Scientology. Just make the Church of Scientology part of the government. Not only would it be a “state religion,” but think of all the money we’d make! Because, let’s face it, people should pay for their religion, right?
- Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster. It’s got a cool name. ‘Nough said.
- Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. It’s working out pretty well for Utah (although it’s not an official “state religion” and some classify it as a branch of Christianity).
- Solipsism. We make our own reality. And in that reality, America is THE BEST COUNTRY IN THE UNIVERSE!!!!
- Satanism. Yep. We’re going there. Just because we can.
This blog’s great!! Thanks :).
