The One Comparing SMU and Carthage
We’ll talk about the similarities later. And clearly, this is stereotypical.
- Clothing labels: This one’s obvious. SMU, in the cradle of privilege, supports the businesses of Gucci, Prada, and Chanel. Carthage celebrates Abercrombie and Fitch, Dooney & Burke, and Hollister.
- Elitism: Yes, they both have it, just in different forms. SMU likes rich, powerful, snooty, and McMansions. Carthage prefers rich, powerful, smaller McMansions on larger properties, and being known as a “good Christian.” (whether or not it’s actually true)
- Cars: You see a lot of cars made by Lexus at SMU. There’s several more high-priced brands, but Lexus seems to be very popular. In Carthage, I see a lot of Fords. But I think it has to do with the fact that there’s only a few car dealerships in Carthage, and the Ford/Lincoln/Mercury one is the biggest.
- Sizes: This one goes for weight and belt buckles (haha). SMU has an army of women who weigh less than 100 lbs. (another blog topic for later), and belt buckles aren’t really that noticible. Carthage has a laid back attitude towards weight, and several of the men in town sport huge bellies that hang over their blue jeans that are held up by a belt with a ginormous buckle.
- Leisure Activities: SMU likes to go to the gym or the club. Carthage likes to hunt and fish.
More to come later, if I think of any.

On the elitism in Carthage, the good christains all drive Lexus. BMW, or Mercedes and so do their kids.
@Rodger
I disagree. You don’t necessarily have to be a good Christian to be a member of “the elite.”
Plus, I never saw any luxury cars in the CHS parking lot.
